Junior Hammerhead Promotions: I’m told the Junior Hammerhead meet was awesome and enjoyed by all. It is quite fun to watch these little ones progress. Some are progressing quite well and we’re excited to announce some promotions to the Senior Hammerhead team. Starting Monday, these kids listed below should begin training with the White training group at 8:15am. A few of you will need to modify your registration to make sure the ASA Exempt option is no longer checked and pay the additional fee. That way they are registered with the league and we can officially enter them in a meet. You’ll also need to make sure you complete the RSVP for the remaining meets. If you don’t have a team swim suit any navy suit will do. I have a new girls 24 with the team logo if anyone is interested.
Our newly promoted Junior Hammerheads are:
- Max Blake
- Emily Burgess
- Stella Caskey
- Simao Ferreira
- Olen Jones
- Molly Moore
- Everett Raleigh
- Claire Stilson
Welcome to the big league kiddos!
Home Meet vs. Westhampton: This is a new team for us. They are from the Embry Hills area and were part of the DeKalb Swim League that merged with ASA a couple of years ago. As always, we want to be good hosts and leave the parking lot open for our visitors. Please try to walk to the pool or park on the side streets if you can.
Swimmers should report at 4:00pm, Warmup at 4:40pm, Start at 5:30 pm. Our bullpen will be in the baby pool area. Make sure those RSVP are completed.
For this first meet, we are closing the pool to members at 1:00pm for setup. If anyone can meet us there it would be very helpful. It is going to be a little trial and error figuring out where we want everything to go.
Volunteer Changes: We’ve made some changes to the volunteer signup, mostly in the area of concession food. We’re trying to offer more options to those that have a hard time working at the meet itself. If you fall in that category, give it a look and see if there is something you can do.
I am getting a sense that some of you may feel intimidated by some of the traditional volunteer roles such and timers, recorders, master recorder, place judge and judge’s recorder. While these have fancy names and may sound difficult, I assure you they are quite simple. All of them can be explained in 30 seconds or less. I’ll prove it:
- Place Judge: (Sitting job) Each team has one and they determine the order that every lane finishes the race. It’s a good idea to have a strong personality in this role so as to not be bullied into changing their mind. If the two can’t agree, they ask the ref for his deciding vote or he may decide to make it a tie.
- Judge’s Recorder: (Sitting job) Once the place judges decide on the official order of finish the judge’s recorder writes it on the sheet for that event. Sometimes the ref may disqualify (DQ) a swimmer for an illegal stroke. They will write “DQ” for that swimmer’s time. A good ref will state the reason for the DQ and that should be noted on the form. Coaches need that for future instruction. When the form is completed it gets handed off to the…
- Master Recorder: (Walking Job) There is one from each team. They walk the sheet to all the lane recorders to get the time for each swimmer in that event. Once the form is completed it is given to the computer folks.
- Timer and Recorders: (Standing Job) Work in pairs in an assigned lane, great for friends/couples, as long as socializing doesn’t get in the way of watching the start and end of a race. The timer runs the Stopwatch (Start/Stop/Reset). The recorder writes the time on their clipboard in the spot for that swimmer. At some point the Master recorder will swing by asking for that time to put on the event sheet.
Please sign up for some of these positions. We cannot start a meet until all of these positions are filled. If these still don’t float your boat we still have a ton of other jobs you can do such as pre-meet setup, post-meet cleanup, concession worker, working the grill, and of course sitting in the bullpen.
